DAR BEN GACEM -KAHIA-

Dar Ben Gacem -Kahia- is the latest addition to Dar Ben Gacem. The Dar was built around the 17th century with prestigious dining/meeting room with gypsum carved ceiling, Tunisian geometric lace like carving, and Kairouani Arabic font script framing the rooms; walls are decorated with rare glass paintings.

Dar Ben Gacem -Kahia- has an important display of over 400 historical ceramic pieces; private collection of Mr. Hamida Ben-Gacem, in an attempt to honour creative Tunisian ceramists of the last 2 centuries. Rooms are named after well-known innovators in Tunisian ceramic history. All Dar furnishing and decoration are handmade by Tunisian artisans from all over the country.

Kallalin

The oldest room in a Dar, decorated with gypsum carving, wood carved and hand painted tiles. With 2 large windows onto the courtyard, located at the ground floor. The room is T-shaped, with a work desk and a traditional Tunisian bench and mirror, at the centre of the room; perfect for reading, relaxing or eating. You will not want to leave Kallalin, with its view onto the courtyard, watching the shadows move, around the day. The room is named after Kallalin pottery workshops, which were an important production workshop in the Medina of Tunis from the 16th till early 20th century. Kallalin ceramic workshops are no longer in the Medina, but you can find some Kallalin ceramic pieces, decorated around the Dar, as part of the private Hamida Ben Gacem collection.

Tissier is the room where you will never want to close your door; the room opens onto dar’s ‘dynamic’ library, and the library almost blends with the room. Tissier has 2 windows onto Kahia Street, with a central bed, reading area and a desk; even if the library itself could ask a private co-working space. Room Tissier, is names after Joseph-Ferdinand Tissier (1856-1923) and Elise Asch Tissier (1854-1917), both Porcelain decorators, who founded the Tissier workshop in Nabeul 1898. They were the first ceramists, who dared blend local and European glazing techniques.

The room is long, with a traditional wall to wall bed, a working desk and reading space. The bathroom is a happy extension of the room, beautifully decorated. The room is on the first floor, with a window onto the balcony, close to Dar’s ‘dynamic’ library. Room Kharrez is named after the Karraz family in Nabeul. Mr. Hassen Kharraz (about 1860/1870-1922), Gacem Kharraz (1910- 1969), and his son Hassen Kharraz (1936-2008), were master ceramists, well known innovators, specialized in yellow and green pottery known as Motli and Chawwāt (unglazed pottery). Some Kharraz ceramic pieces are decorated around the Dar.

Room Kedidi, is beautifully decorated with Arabic calligraphy wall hangings, and the perfect window chair, for reading. Kedid has 2 single beds, large antique closet, and its bathroom. Situated on the first floor, with a perfcet light form the courtyard. Room is named after Fradj El Kedidi (1895-1956), the founder of Kedid ceramic workshop in 1939. Kedid was an apprentice at Tissier’s factory in Nabeul, then founded his workshop, which became the exclusive supplier, of jars yearly offered as a present, to the beylical family, by the mayor of Tunis. The workshop grew and became a factory, and active today. Kedid was also involved with the cooperative of ceramists in Nabeul.

Miled

Miled feels small, but smartly decorated, to seem royal, with its wall-to-wall traditional bed. Has a sofa, convenient, for working, reading or just chilling by the large window, overlooking the first-floor balcony. The room is named after Miled brothers’ ceramic workshop. The brothers are, Taïeb (1924-2000) & Nasser (1928-1997). Both had their apprenticeship at Kedidi’s factory, and then launched their own workshop in 1948 in Nabeul. The workshop prospered, thanks to tourism sector growth, after independence in 1956.
